Microsoft has announced that Skype will be officially retired in May 2025, giving users 10 weeks to transition to Microsoft Teams (Free) as the company consolidates its communication services.
Once a leader in internet calling, Skype’s user base has declined from 300 million to just 36 million, prompting Microsoft to shift its focus to Teams, which offers one-on-one and group calls, messaging, file sharing, and expanded collaboration features like calendar management and community-building tools.
Microsoft states that Teams has seen a 4X increase in meeting minutes over the past two years, reinforcing its role as the preferred communication platform. Users will soon be able to log into Teams with their existing Skype accounts for a seamless transition.
